Are there still sandwiches in the future??

Despite being relatively unfamiliar with the Star Trek franchise aside from a few lead character names, catchphrases and other mainstream references, I very much enjoyed Paramount’s epic beginning to the summer blockbuster season. Though I’m sure real Trekkies were keen to inside references that went over my head, I still found the film to be a solid mix of explosive action, light drama and sideline humor. Spaceships piloted by Harold sans Kumar, time travel (which apparently does not follow Harry Potter rules of not being allowed to meet yourself), that ole “beaming up” trick, crazy monsters, explosions, explosions, explosions and planet-eating black holes – all good fun in my book. For my limited knowledge of any previous Star Trek depictions, I though Zachary Quinto’s “Spock” was pretty good, but I couldn’t shake his “Sylar” character for the life of me and think if he had combined characters, some head-slicing could have been useful against those angry future Romulans. A friend of mine remarked that the use of “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys in one of the first scenes of the movie was misplaced, but I disagree and think it matched the sentiment of the scene well – the scene which when I saw it as a preview, is the reason why I wanted to see Star Trek in the first place in all of its “kid averting certain death” badassness. The film certainly was not flawless, and I disagree with comparisons as this year’s “Iron Man,” but it met and at times surpassed my expectations, which is always better than the alternative. I will say, however, that it is not worth the extra $5 to see it in IMAX, at least at the AMC in Times Square, but that’s just me.
And now we wait with bated breath for Terminator…
